Overnight Charge

  • The most cost effective way to charge a NiMH battery is to charge at C/10 or lower.
  • Newer cells have an oxygen recycling catalyst which prevents overcharge damage.
  • Oxygen recycling cannot meet the needs of charge rate over C/10.
  • The minimum voltage required for a full charge depends on the temperature (1.4 volts per cell at 20 degrees C).
  • Continued charging at C/10 does not cause venting. The battery might get warm.
  • A good charger will switch over to trickle charge after -dV or dT is detected.
  • This type of safe smart charging will work on any capacity battery.
  • NiMH battery capacity and cycle life will be longest using this charge method.
  • It is said that slow charging makes it more difficult to detect -dV or dT.
