NiMH rechargeable batteries and NiCd rechargeable
batteries can be used interchangeably as they provide the same average voltage.
The major differences between these rechargeable batteries are the charging and
discharging characteristics.
NiMH and NiCd rechargeable battery characterisitcs:
- NiCd rechargeable battery technology costs less than NiMH
rechargeable battery technology.
- NiMH batteries have a higher capacity than NiCd rechargeable
batteries.
- NiMH batteries have a higher discharge rate than NiCd
rechargeable batteries.
- NiCd is better for rugged and demanding applications (
drills, tools etc … ).
- Some chargers accept both types, but some don’t. Beware.
Even though NiMH rechargeable batteries are more popular and
deliver higher capacity, NiCd rechargeable batteries are just as good for
everyday use. The lower cost NiCd rechargeable batteries can save you money and
you can find many chargers that charge both NiCd and NiMH rechargeable
batteries.
